PSOBLTA vs Campden Hill LTC

Match Report:
This year, Bonfire Night provided the backdrop to the fixture between the PUBS and Campden Hill LTC, where the teams battled it out in an evening match on the indoor acrylic.
Ben Rogers and Russell Dykes played at first pair for the PUBS and made a strong start against Campden Hill’s second pairing of Nenad Terzic and Ben Zuckerman. The momentum swung throughout, in what was the most hotly contested match of the day. The pick-ups from seemingly irretrievable shots and deft net play led to some superb extended rallies and provided great viewing. After narrowly losing the opening set, Ben and Russell were also denied the second set on a couple of key points, with a scoreline which did not reflect the parity between the teams. Meanwhile, the PUBS second pairing of Harry Gardner and Davor Pavlovic were up against Zach Hewlin and James Scales. In spite of some heroic passing shots from the PUBS team and key changes in tactics, they could not find a way to break down the ferocious onslaught from the CHLTC first pairing.
The second round of matches provided a similar story to the first, with Campden Hill growing into the fixture and the PUBS struggling to find a solid foothold. In spite of the eventual comprehensive victory by Campden Hill, everyone enjoyed the matches and there was some good quality and competitive tennis on display. Afterwards, we enjoyed a match tea in the clubhouse, very kindly put on by the club.
It was great to have this fixture back in the calendar after the brief hiatus in scheduling of the last couple of years. Initially down for a late summer match this year, it was moved to the first week in November. As it happens, the opportunity to play some competitive tennis at this time of year was very welcome so we shall look to continue with this date in the future. Thanks must go to Campden Hill LTC for their very generous hospitality in hosting the fixture. We look forward to next year’s match where the PUBS hope to return to winning ways.
