The match against Felsted School took place on Saturday 17th June as planned. We played on the 1st VI grass courts at Felsted (which is the real attraction), the weather was perfect and as usual it was played in a great spirit. The pupils were a credit to the school and even us PUBS were well behaved! We had been told to put out a strong team, as the School hadn’t been beaten this season – and Coach Roslyn thought they needed to be taught a lesson! We had a slightly weakened team on the day as one member was sadly forced to drop out through a bereavement, but I found a last-minute replacement and we played together in the third pair.
The end result was 5-4 to the School, the match hanging on the final rubber in which my partner and I unfortunately came second! The School therefore remain unbeaten this season and we toasted their success with a few beers afterwards – funny that! A great match and a good turnaround from the boys who we defeated 7-2 last year. Once again, there was a good crowd of spectators – who were well fed and watered – and generally got into the spirit of it!
