PSOBLTA v St. George’s College – 7 May 2016

Lost 2.5-1.5

SGC-2016

The first Saturday of May saw the Association’s opening grass court fixture of the summer season at St George’s College, Weybridge – and what a close encounter it turned out to be!

In the first round, St George’s 2nd pair Jamie Boden and Taylor Papworth pulled off a surprise win in two sets (6-3, 7-5) against the PUBS’ 1st pair of Ed Fry and Brad Keenes – but only after the PUBS had served for the 2nd set at 5-4, 40-0!  The other rubber saw even more twists and turns as the PUBS 2nd pair Conor Boden and Chris Jenkins came from a set and 4-2 down to win 5-7, 6-4, 7-2 (tie-break) against SGC’s 1st pair, Daniel Boden and Tom Nair.

In the second round, Ed and Brad were again unlucky to lose in two sets 3-6, 4-6 against Daniel and Tom.  Meanwhile Conor and the frequently inspired Chris split sets with Jamie and Taylor 6-3, 6-7 before that rubber was declared an honourable draw.

So, after three and a half hours of fluctuating and (for one ex Chairman at least) exhausting tennis, St George’s were deemed to have triumphed 2.5-1.5.  Slightly disappointing for the PUBS but at least some honour was preserved for all parties in the Boden household!

My thanks to all participants and St George’s for hosting us on their excellent grass courts.
