The first round of qualifying for the 2018 D’Abernon Cup was held indoors at St George’s College on Saturday, 7 April.

Six teams of Old Boys were playing, representing Lancing College, Sherbourne School, Shrewsbury School, St George’s College, St Paul’s School and Wellington College.  All matches were played in great spirit, to a high standard and were closely fought.

The Old Salopians qualified in first place, winning all of their matches, with three of their wins being on tiebreaks.  The Old Wellingtonians and Old Paulines were in contention going into the last round of matches, with the Old Paulines needing a 5-2 win to advance on a countback.  The Old Paulines were up 4-2 going into the tiebreak, but lost a close tiebreak 7-5.

Congratulations to the Old Salopians and Old Wellingtonians on qualifying through to the quarter-finals.  Our thanks go to St George’s College for allowing us to use their great facilities and all the teams and captains for attending.

We now await the results from the two other qualifying rounds over the following two weekends at Stoke Park and David Lloyd Raynes Park respectively to see who else will complete the draw for the quarter-finals.
